A 10-year-old girl told her mother a classmate raped her at her elementary school, according to a police report.

"She hasn't been the same. She's just been sleeping," said the girl's mother, who wants to remain anonymous to protect her daughter's identity.

The woman said she took her daughter to Children's Mercy Hospital after the girl with special needs came home crying and recounted what happened at school.

The 10-year-old told a social worker at the hospital that after lunch on Monday at George Washington Carver Elementary School, a male classmate made sexual advances on her when their teacher left the two alone in a classroom.

She tried get away, but that he locked the door and raped her.

According to the police report, the victim said her teacher "told her to stop tattling" when she told him about it.

The girl's mother took her to Children's Mercy for an exam after hearing the news, and a social worker there told police her rape kit showed bruising.

"Question your child after school every day, because if it happened to her it could happen to others," the girl's mother warned other parents.

Police said they won't know more until they do a formal interview of the girl with a state social worker next week, after which they will interview the boy and the teacher.

The school district said they take all allegations seriously and are looking into the matter.
