Items From Alarm Clocks To Big Screen TVs Accepted For Recycling

Many people are upgrading their televisions these days. But, what do you do with your old TV?

With the June 12 deadline to convert to digital television looming, many Kansas Citians are scrambling to find a place to recycle their old televisions, computers and other electronics.

Electronic Disposal Technologies, Inc., a newly-opened business at 1525 West Ninth St., is offering a solution this weekend for those seeking an answer about where to recycle their unwanted electronics. EDT, Inc., has extended its hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday for those wanting to drop items off for electronics ranging from alarm clocks to big-screen televisions.

Televisions and computers should not be thrown into landfills because they can leak lead, mercury and phosphor -- toxic waste -- into ground water and pollute the air. They need to be recycled but that can sometimes be difficult.

"It's very hard," Tricia Raya said. "I had to call several different numbers for trash collectors. A lot of places wanted to charge $100 to take a TV that's not worth a buck."

The fees for recycling items this weekend range from $1 for small items like keyboards and alarm clocks to $50 for large screen televisions. For specific fee information, call EDT, Inc., at 816-210-3015.
