Tornado Rated EF-1

Taylor Jenkins, 13, was at her grandparents' home near Tonganoxie, Kan., on Saturday when the tornado sirens went off.

Instead of going into the basement, however, Jenkins grabbed a camera and captured the tornado on tape.

Jenkins was with her brother, father and grandparents when the EF-1 tornado first formed.

The teen said she saw the clouds spinning in one direction, then another. When the debris started flying, Jenkins said she began recording the twister.

No one was injured by the tornado, which hit several barns and homes, but it left a trail of debris. Jenkins went to see the damage the next day.

Although Jenkins said the experience gave her a jolt of excitement, she said if the tornado had been any closer, she would have run to the basement.

Officials advise anyone in an area where a tornado has been spotted to take shelter immediately regardless of distance.

Jenkins said she is thinking about becoming a storm chaser when she gets older.
