TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- A group of hair stylists is helping families of Tonganoxie High School students facing four separate tragedies. In February, Austin Stone, a high school junior in Tonganoxie, went in to get his wisdom teeth pulled, but a mistake with the anesthesia put him into a coma. His classmate, senior Connor Olson, is undergoing chemotherapy to treat a rare cancer.Sophomore Jake Ostermeyer has kidney disease and is awaiting a kidney transplant from his mother.Jeremy Elliot, another Tonganoxie High School student, unexpectedly died in his sleep last week after heart failure. The hair stylists at Hair & Co. said they don't know the boys personally, but since Tonganoxie is a small town, they know about the boys and their story inspired them to do something to help.Marci Pope, who owns Hair & Co., is donating all of Sunday's profits to the families of the Tonganoxie students.Pope said she knows the Stone family, and wants to help with some of the expenses involved in the tragedy."He had nitrous gas instead of oxygen. Therefore his body was without oxygen for five to seven minutes," said customer Amanda Stewart.Stone is still in a coma."We've had a rough month. Seems our junior and senior boys have been hit hard," said hair stylist Jen Hull.Jeremie Maus, a friend of the victims, said, "It hasn't been the same. Everyone's hanging their heads, trying to get through it."The women at Hair & Co. said they are cutting for the families of the four boys, hoping their efforts inspire the community to open their hearts and their pocketbooks to help.Anyone who would like to help these families and donate to Team Tongie, which is raising funds to help the families of Austin Stone, Connor Olson, Jake Ostermeyer and Jeremy Elliot, can call Brandon Parker, Tonganoxie Athletic Director, at 913-845-2654.
