Firefighters credit working smoke alarms with saving two families from an Olathe duplex fire early Wednesday morning.

Crews said a family of five, one adult and four children, heard their alarm about 2:30 a.m. at their home in the 1000 block of East Prairie Street in central Olathe. They escaped the house and alerted the family of five on the other side of the duplex.

Firefighters said the blaze appeared to have started in the kitchen.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $100,000.
