A death investigation is under way after a woman's body was found inside her charred apartment early Saturday morning.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started, but they said they found the smoke alarm disabled on the kitchen counter.

Someone living upstairs in the apartments, the Lodge of Overland Park apartments on West 106th Street, called 911 when they smelled smoke about 3 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they and found the victim dead in the back bedroom.

Fire crews said the flames were already out when they got to the scene, but they think it started in the bedroom.

Jason Rhodes, of the Overland Park Fire Department, said that if that smoke alarm had been working, the woman might not have died.

The name of the victim has not been released.
