KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The deadline set by Missouri's attorney general has arrived for AT&T and the Yellow Pages to put a stop to bogus locksmith listings.Last week, Attorney General Chris Koster gave AT&T five business days to cut off hundreds of fraudulent phone numbers and remove the bogus listings from YellowPages.com.But many of the numbers were still there on Thursday.Type in Kansas City Locksmith and you'll find a string of phone numbers, many with bogus addresses, which the Better Business Bureau has linked to a scam.Koster's demand came after a KCTV5 News investigation exposed a network of locksmiths, based out of state, who quote you one price, then double or even triple the tab once they're at the site.Customers are stuck with the bill after unknowingly flipping open the Yellow Pages and seeing multiple listings that look local, but aren't.So, why are the listings still available after Koster's deadline?KCTV5's Dana Wright contacted AT&T several times during the five-day period to see whether they were working to remove the numbers. It replied with this statement, "We take this issue very seriously, because the accuracy of our AT&T Real Yellow Pages is very important to consumers and our advertisers. We are investigating the issue and taking action."An AT&T spokesman claimed the company has taken down 90,000 listings across the country since it first learned about the locksmith issue. When we asked how many Kansas City area numbers it has pulled, it didn't respond. If you find yourself locked out, experts suggest you find a legitimate locksmith company through the Better Business Bureau before you turn to the Yellow Pages, 411 or the Internet. On Thursday afternoon, AT&T Yellow Pages sent KCTV5 a second statement, saying, "We are working to pull down listings of names given to us by the AG as well as continuing to work to clean up other questionable listings. Several already have been pulled down."
