Contract Talks End With No Agreement

Union, Builders' Assoc. Disagree On Contract Details

Construction at the Truman Sports Complex may be halted again after contract talks ended Wednesday afternoon.

Late into the night Tuesday, Cement Masons Local Union 518 met with the builders' association to work on an agreement before the current contract expired at midnight.

When no agreement was reached, picketers walked at the stadium for about five hours Wednesday morning. About 9 a.m., workers said a tentative deal had been made and picketers left.

Union officials said Wednesday afternoon there were "problems with the tentative agreement," so the two sides went back to the bargaining table.

Because a tentative agreement was reached, workers who had been honoring the picket line went back to work.

About 4 p.m., the talks ended without an agreement.

Kevin Sexton, business manager for the union, said, "It's not about greed. It's about what's right."

Sexton didn't say what the sticking point was in the negotiations, but he said the union is in a good position because despite the recession, there is plenty of work for his members to do.

No new talks are scheduled, but Sexton said he would like to see more negotiations as early as Wednesday night. He would not comment on whether the pick lines would return to the stadium if an agreement was not reached tonight.

Other unions at the stadium who have agreed to tentative agreements have vowed to honor a strike. They said they wouldn't cross a picket line to work at the stadiums.

The union official said a strike could also put a halt to work at the Performing Arts Center, the St. Luke's Hospital expansion, JE Dunn's world headquarters and several area schools.

The Sports Authority said things would be set for Royals Opening Day at the K next week, regardless of a strike. But improvements are far from done on Arrowhead Stadium, and it could affect the start of the football season for the Chiefs.
