KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Animal Control officials confirmed Monday that they'd put down two dogs that attacked a mail carrier on Saturday. The dogs jumped a fence at a house at East 27th Street and Chelsea Avenue and attacked the woman. The woman suffered bites and cuts to her face and head, and the dogs' remains are being sent to a lab in Jefferson City to be tested for rabies, officials said.Officials said they had to put the dogs down because the owner's rabies paperwork could not be verified."The closer that the bite is to the brain, then the quicker we have to react, so a bite on the leg, that type of thing, you've got a little bit more time to observe the animal, but when you've got a bite that comes around the face or the scalp, something along those lines, you've got to act quickly," said Don Pickard of Animal Control. The attack Saturday wasn't the first time Animal Control had been called to a house for a bite. They were at the house on May 5 but couldn't say whether the same dogs were involved in the incident. The mail carrier attacked Saturday is expected to recover.
