A postal employee was taken to a hospital after being attacked by two dogs on her route, police said.

The letter carrier has serious injuries after being atacked by the dogs, who jumped the fence outside a house near East 27th and Chelsea Avenue.

Animal control officers removed both dogs after the attack about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Terry Matthews lives across the street and said he heard a commotion and ran outside to see what was happening.

"Oh, it was terrible. I didn't know what to do," Matthews said. "When I ran outside, both dogs had her on the ground. By me hollering, one other neighbor came across the street. The dogs backed off and by that time, she jumped off the ground and ran towards me and asked me to get her some help."

Matthews dialed 911 and helped the carrier to her car to wait for the ambulance. He said she was bleeding badly from her face and scalp.

Neighbors said the letter carrier has been the regular carrier for some time, and she is well liked. They said they are sorry to see this happen to her.

Neighbor Caleb Barber said, "It's a bad deal. That's her job and what she's trying to do. And she's interrupted by dogs and stuff. That's why they keep mace and everything. It's a bad deal."

Kansas City police are investigating the attack. No charges have been filed.
