Police Suspect Foul Play In Woman's Disappearance

Kansas City Mother Wouldn't Have Left Her Kids, Neighbor Says

Kansas City police said Monday they suspect foul play in the disappearance of a woman missing since Saturday.

Renee M. Pernice, 35, is married with three young children and lives in the 1100 block of Northwest 66th Terrace.

She's a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital and teaches nursing students. Her husband, relatives said, is a member of the National Guard.

Pernice's father, Rick Pretz, said he is growing increasingly concerned as each hour passes. He said it's not like Pernice to just take off. He last spoke with her on New Year's Day and reported her missing on Saturday.

"No one can account for her presence after 8 a.m. Friday morning," Pretz said.

Police investigating her disappearance said they found her cell phone on Saturday near East Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue and searched the area.

"She was there at the house one minute and gone, basically, the next. Without a trace. Without a car. That just doesn't make sense," said Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood.

There are fliers posted on every other tree in her neighborhood, and residents said something was wrong when a devoted mother left her children behind.

"I don't think she'd leave her kids. She just looked like she was too much of a devoted mother," neighbor Butch Miller said. "She just seemed like she was a pretty good woman."

Pernice's husband, Shon Pernice, declined to comment Monday.

Pernice is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall with blue eyes and shoulder-length brunette hair.

Police urged anyone with any information about her whereabouts to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.
