About 75,000 people listened to then Sen. Barack Obama speak in October at the Liberty Memorial.

The then Democratic presidential candidate spoke for about a half-hour about the economy, the war in Iraq, health care, education and other issues.

"The time for change has come. We can do this," Obama told the crowd.

He went on to say, "If you will fight with me and work with me and organize with me and vote for me, I promise you we won't just win Missouri. We'll win this general election, and you and I together will change this country and change the world."

At the time, he was just 17 days away from becoming president elect of the United States.

Kansas City Mayor Embroiled In City Hall Battle, Lawsuits

Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser and the City Council have battled about whether his wife can volunteer in his office. That controversy arose after a former mayoral aide sued the city, the mayor and his wife, Gloria Squitiro, claiming Squitiro made lewd comments and referred to her, a black woman, as "Mammy." Ruth Bates also claimed she was paid less than her peers because of her race and gender.

After settlement agreements were made with Squitiro and then Funkhouser, Bates filed a new claim accusing the mayor of attempting to destroy her reputation with statements and news releases calling her motives into question.

Bates filed the new discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, charging the city and Funkhouser with illegally retaliating against her because of her lawsuit, said her attorney, Lynne Bratcher.

Kansas City Chiefs GM Carl Peterson Resigns

Kansas City Chiefs general manager and president Carl Peterson resigned in December.

Peterson took over in 1989 as president, general manager and chief executive officer. Peterson and then-head coach Marty Schottenheimer built the Chiefs into an NFL powerhouse the next 10 years.

However, Kansas City faltered the past decade and seemed to hit an emotional bottom with a 22-21 loss to San Diego, which left the Chiefs 2-12.

The team ended the season 2-14, the worst season in the franchise's 49-year history.

Blue Springs, Mo., native David Cook became the nation's "American Idol."

The singer returned to Blue Springs in May.

He rode in a parade in Blue Springs and performed for fans in his hometown. He also performed on the Kansas City Live stage in the Kansas City Power & Light District in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

On Thanksgiving night, Cook came back to Kansas City to flip the switch on the Plaza Lights.

Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison Resigns

Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison spent his last day in office on Jan. 31. An extramarital affair forced him out.

In December, special prosecutors announced that Morrison wouldn't face criminal charges for his actions during the affair. The prosecutors, Robert Arnold III and Timothy Keck, announced the results of a nine-month investigation in a letter to Johnson County commissioners and District Attorney Phill Kline, who had appointed them to investigate his political opponent.

Morrison's former mistress, Linda Carter, had worked in the Johnson County District Attorney's Office for Morrison and later for Kline. She alleged that after Morrison became attorney general, he tried to use her to influence a federal lawsuit against Kline and to gather sensitive information on Kline's investigation of an abortion clinic.

Morrison has said many of Carter's statements are "patently false."
