KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The family of a homicide victim is outraged at the sentence for a man involved in his killing, a man who admitted he did it because he was bored.Fabian Brown will serve 15 years in prison for his role in Robert Osborn's death, but to a family of a murdered love one, 15 years is not enough.Rick Osborn and his brother Ron tried to show the judge through pictures and trophies just what kind of man their brother, Robert, was."The most selfish person was probably killed by the most selfless person," Rick Osborn said.
Robert Osborn was gunned down while riding his bike to work near a Hy-Vee grocery store near 47th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard three years ago.Brown, along with his co defendant, Raphael L. Willis, admitted to shooting Osborn for no other reason than because they were bored. The pair, ages 19 and 20 at the time, told police they were just looking for someone to kill.In a plea agreement, prosecutors asked for 20 years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea to murder in the second degree but Robert Obsorn's family wanted life without parole. They asked the judge to override the prosecution's request. They were shocked and saddened when the Jackson County judge sentenced Brown to 15 years in prison instead of 20 years or life."People are being shot off their porches, randomly killed. You find bodies along the street everywhere. We've got to do something, and the whole criminal justice system is part of that. It's not everything, but the court system needs to step up deterrence, and we didn't see that today," Rick Osborn said. The brothers began researching the homicide rate in Kansas City after their brother's murder. They created their own Web site with details about Kansas City's homicide rate.Click here to visit it.
