GLADSTONE, Mo. -- Fire ripped through a house in Gladstone early Sunday morning, leaving a teenage girl badly burned.Mai Lisa Martin, 15, was one of seven people in the house in the 5600 block of North Woodland Avenue at the time of the fire.Jerry Martin described the scene as they tried to get his sister out of the fire. "She was trying to get it, but she slipped and burned her hair. All the fire came to her face and she got trapped. We tried to pull her out, but it started burning," he said. The girl suffered burns and inhalation injuries, but is expected to be OK, her brother said. Everyone else made it out of the house safely.
The house was nearly gutted in the blaze. Neighbors John and Diona Sims said the force was so tremendous, it blew the windows out of their house next door.Fire investigators believe the fire started in the garage and was likely electrical.
