Witnesses: Argument At Party Led To Shooting

A teenager who just learned he was going to be a father was shot and killed during a party at a friend's house over the weekend, police said.

Ivan Hernandez, 17, was at a friend's 21st birthday party with about 50 other people at a house near East 11th Street and Cleveland Avenue on Saturday night when he was shot, police said.

Eric O'Connor, the victim's best friend, said, "We were having a party, and my friend got in a fight and ended up getting shot right in my front yard."

O'Connor told police that Hernandez got into a fist fight with another man around 2 a.m. He said that man pulled out a gun and shot Hernandez five to six times.

Hernandez's friend Chris Swayne said, "No guns had to be pulled out. They could've fought, squashed it. Whoever got beat up could've walked away."

O'Connor and Swayne both said they saw the shooter at the party, but neither one of them knew who he was.

"He was suspicious through the party. I was looking at him in the house. He wasn't talking, just standing there in the dark," O'Connor said.

Kansas City police said a second person was shot down the street from the house. He was found in critical condition, sitting behind the wheel of a pickup truck that had crashed into a light pole a block from where Ivan was shot dead.

Hernandez's friends said they don't know who that victim is or how he was shot. Police haven't released any details.

"None of these kids understand the consequences of pulling out a gun and taking someone's life," Swayne said.

O'Connor said Hernandez recently got out of the gang life, had a job and had just learned his girlfriend was pregnant.
