Investigators are working to determine what led to a weekend fire at Free State Brewery's newest off-site bottling plant.

The fire began Sunday morning on Moodie Road in Lawrence.

Fire crews called for a second alarm to help get the flames under control.

No one was inside the plant at the time of the fire.

Brewmaster Steve Bradt said only refrigeration equipment was running at the time of the fire. The plant contained brewing equipment and malted barley, wheat and hops.

Several pieces of equipment were damaged in the blaze, crews said. There was no word yet on the cost of the damage.

Free State has been overhauling the plant for months. It plans to significantly increase production from the 2,700 barrels of beer per year it brews at its downtown location.
