A 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the head shortly after noon Monday inside her Kansas City home, according to Kansas City police.

The girl was in the living room of her home in the 3000 block of Bellaire Avenue with some other children when the shooting occurred, police said.

Her wound was considered life-threatening, police said.

Her mother and another woman were in the kitchen of the home at the time, police said.

They drove the girl to the emergency room of the Veteran's Administration hospital at 4801 East Linwood Boulevard, police said.

The girl was then transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

It wasn't immediately clear who the gun belonged to or how the girl got the gun.

Police removed several other children from the girl's home. They were investigating and said prosecutors could file child endangerment charges in the case.

Vanessa Barr, a neighbor, works at a doughnut shop and brings doughnuts to the children at the girl's house.

"'Mama, here comes the doughnut lady.' That's all I can hear them say when I turn the corner," Barr said. "Every time I turn this corner, I look for them. If they aren't in their yard, I make a circle until I see them."
