LENEXA, Kan. -- A thief or thieves with a taste for high-end rims hit some Johnson County residents. The tires, rims and lugs were stolen from two cars in the parking lot of The Trails apartment homes near West 87th Street Parkway and Renner Road, residents said. Whoever took the tires placed landscaping bricks under the vehicles, residents said.Sara Hoffman's boyfriend uses one of the vehicles to get to work, she said."We're the ones having to deal with this," Hoffman said. "What are we going to do about this? It's getting worse and worse. We understand nothing like this can be 100 percent prevented, but if we had some sort of surveillance or gates at the entrances."
Keith Darrah said break-ins and burglaries have been happening too often at the apartments. Items were stolen from his sport utility vehicle last month, he said."It's very frustrating indeed," Darrah said. "Who wants to wake up and come out, and well, your vehicle's broken into again? Nobody wants that."Despite the burglaries, Lenexa police said there did not seem to be a rash of them and that the apartment complex was one with the fewest reports of burglaries, but officers were investigating the reports that were made.Residents were waiting for the apartment owners to make their living area more secure, they said. The apartment manager was not available for comment.Lenexa police were monitoring the area closely because a nearby construction site is a target for copper thieves, they said.
