Decision About Role Of Mayor's Wife Delayed

Wife Volunteers In Mayor's Office

The role of Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser's wife at City Hall won't take center stage again until at least next week.

The City Council decided at its meeting Thursday not to consider an ordinance that would regulate volunteers at City Hall until the next council meeting.

Funkhouser has said the ordinance is aimed squarely at him and his wife, Gloria Squitiro. She has been an unpaid volunteer in his office, and the city is involved in a lawsuit over her alleged actions toward a City Hall employee.

A City Council committee voted Wednesday to recommend passage of the ordinance. It was originally expected to come up at Thursday afternoon's full City Council meeting.

Some council members said they expected it to pass by a veto-proof margin.

Funkhouser held a news conference late Wednesday afternoon and said he cannot allow the City Council to run his office. He asked the City Council to put off the vote until after the November election so they can concentrate on the light rail measure that will be on the ballot.
