Federal prosecutors have charged a former Kansas City man in connection with the killing of a security guard during an armed bank robbery.

Prosecutors charged Iralee E. French, Jr., 21, of St. Louis, Mo., in a criminal complaint filed Thursday afternoon in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., according to a news release from the office of John F. Wood, United States attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

The complaint alleges that French killed security guard Dwight W. Mayhugh Sr., during an armed robbery on Feb. 24, 2006, at the United Missouri Bank at 7901 Wornall Road.

According to an affidavit, French and another person took a cab to the area and waited in the bank's underground parking garage.

When Mayhugh pulled into the parking garage, French came out from hiding and fired a shotgun, striking Mayhugh, who was still sitting in his car, according to the affidavit.

French walked over to Mayhugh, took the keys off his side and led the bank guard inside the bank so he could open the safes, according to the affidavit.

When Mayhugh couldn't open the safes, French and the other person left the bank, taking Mayhugh's vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Mayhugh was taken to a hospital but died from his gunshot wounds the next day.

In mid-August, more than 100 investigators seeking clues in Mayhugh's death, including police, FBI agents and other federal investigators, canvassed nearly 500 homes in the area of 24th and Oakley streets near Blue Valley Park over the course of two days.

Authorities interviewed a witness Wednesday then prosecutors filed the charges Thursday.

The person who authorities believe was with French was in custody in St. Louis on Thursday on unrelated charges.

A $60,000 reward was being offered in the case.
