KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Authorities investigating a cold case homicide were conducting the area's largest-ever neighborhood canvass Monday when a man confronted them with a machete.A law enforcement officer shot the man with a bean bag, and investigators took him into custody. Prosecutors later charged Eldred L. Sailor, 62, of Kansas City, with two counts of assault of a law enforcement officer.More than 100 investigators, include police, FBI agents and other federal investigators, are canvassing nearly 500 homes in the area of 24th and Oakley streets near Blue Valley Park over the course of two days. They're seeking clues in the shooting death of a security guard at a bank.Dwight Mayhugh, 71, was working at the UMB Bank at West 79th Street and Wornall Road in February 2006 when two masked gunmen forced him into the bank and demanded money. The would-be robbers didn't get any cash but shot Mayhugh before running off.He died three days later.Investigators believe the same people hit the same bank two weeks earlier, when they tried unsuccessfully to kidnap a teller. They stole the cars belonging to Mayhugh and the teller and dumped them in the neighborhood where the canvass is taking place.Police decided to canvass because they recently received a new tip that led them to believe someone in the area knows more than they are saying about the crime.A $60,000 reward is being offered in the case.Call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.
