KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three men with handguns burst into the South Kansas City home of a couple as they were eating breakfast in their sunroom at about 7:30 a.m., according to Kansas City police and the residents. The 85-year-old husband said one of the intruders grabbed him by the shirt, stuck a gun to his chest and said, "Where's your money?"The couple didn't have much cash, but after the gunmen took their billfolds, one of them made the couple sit in the living room while the other two ransacked the couple's bedroom."They got some cash and some jewelry and some credit cards, stuff like that, and then they left the residence without harming them," said Sgt. Shane Hurst, of the police department.
Pam Ames lives down the street from the couple."It's kind of a scary world right now," Ames said.Ames said she was shocked it happened in their neighborhood."This neighborhood, we moved in about 10, 11 months ago and it's been very safe. We feel totally safe here, so it's a shock," Ames said. The couple hadn't locked up their house, and police warned that residents should keep their doors locked."There are always people looking for opportunities no matter where you're at," Hurst said. "You get into a comfort zone being in a nice area. It can happen, so just be cautious."Police said they were concerned about the boldness of the men and that they wanted to get them off the streets before they hurt someone. They urged anyone with any information about the crime to report a tip.Call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus your message to CRIMES (274637) or submit your tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.
