Children Left Alone; Day Care's License Suspended

Police Watch Over As Parents Pick Up Children

Kansas City police stood by at a Northland day care center Thursday to make sure parents picked up their children after the facility lost its state license and closed.

The state suspended the license of Jay’s Learning Center, Inc. and Little Rascals, off Barry Road near Troost Avenue, because there were only three teachers on duty for more than 50 children.

On two separate occasions, children were left alone in the day care center parking lot, according to state officials.

On May 2, two 2-year-olds were left alone in the parking lot, and on July 17, four 2-year-olds were left alone in the lot, according to state officials.

In another incident, a child was left alone on a back porch, according to state officials.

Teachers leaving the facility had no comment, and attempts to contact to the owner were unsuccessful. A former worker said the day care had difficulty hiring and keeping staff.

Children enrolled at the facility ranged in age from 6 weeks to 5 years.

One grandmother picking up her grandchild Thursday said she was shocked.

Liona Newberry said, "I've never heard of any problem going on here at all."
