KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City family had a rude awakening early Thursday morning when a car slammed into their house. The car left no skid marks before crashing into the house near East 20th Street and Lawn Avenue around 12:30 a.m., police said. The house sits at the bottom of a hill. When you cross 20th Street on Lawn, you have to go right or left -- the driver of the crashed car continued straight on and hit the house. There were several adults and children in the home at the time.
A teenager who lives in the house said his 2-year-old nephew was sleeping on the couch when the car came through the wall. The teen said the car pushed the little boy into a mattress, and it was the mattress that protected him. He said the mattress was folded like a sandwich with the boy inside. He said the toddler suffered a chest and lung injury, but is expected to be OK.
