13-Year-Old Girl In Custody In Homicide

UPDATED: 6:36 pm CDT July 25, 2008

Police have a 13-year-old girl in custody in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in Kansas City, Kan.

Keaire Brown turned herself in.

She was charged in the juvenile department of Wyandotte County District Court with first-degree murder, or in the alternative, second-degree murder and with attempted aggravated robbery, according to a news release from prosecutors.

KCTV5 News generally does not name juvenile suspects but chose to identify Brown due to the severity of the allegations against her.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the area of North 10th Street and Laurel Avenue about a wreck.

When they arrived, they determined that Scott Sappington Jr. had been killed.

A vehicle had jumped a curve and was stopped across a sidewalk.

Witnesses said Sappington had just dropped off some family members at his grandma's house and started to drive away when shots were fired.

Sappington, 16, was going to be a senior this fall at Sumner Academy, where he played football, wrestled and ran track.

"It's hard. It's really hard, and when you have a good kid, it's hard for you to understand how this happened," said Felicia Johnson, the victim's mother.

The shooter left behind clothing, images of which police made public, in hopes that someone would recognize it and lead them to the girl.

Sappington's father, Scott Sappington Sr., said, "Anyone who knows something, speak up. Give our heart a rest and bring this person to justice."

Sappington's friends and family members planned a prayer vigil on Friday night.

Brown was in custody Friday in the Wyandotte County juvenile detention facility. She is scheduled to appear in juvenile court at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

"She's a loving, funny, outgoing type of ... She's 13 years old," said Michael Lucas, Brown's cousin. "It kind of threw me yesterday, everything that was going on."

He had a message for the victim's family.

"I pray for them, and like I said, I hope when everything comes out during the course of this investigation they'll find some closure and get some peace," Lucas said.
