MERRIAM, Kan. -- Prosecutors charged a former Shawnee Mission Medical Center nurse with aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery after they said he sexually assaulted two female patients at the hospital. They accused Shawn Adam Garbin, 34, of Olathe, Kan., of fondling one patient and having a drunk patient perform a sex act on him in December, according to court records."Immediately upon learning of the allegations, we suspended the employee," said Joyce Portella, a hospital representative. "(He) had no more patient contact. We did an investigation, turned the matter over to authorities and then terminated the employee."The hospital hired Garbin in April 2007. He had worked at the hospital for eight months.
He passed their extensive background check, officials said, but as a result of the allegations, he lost his nursing license. Kansas officials suspended in May."The character flaws of one former employee do not reflect on the fine quality staff of Shawnee Mission Medical Center, and an isolated incident doesn't reflect poorly on our staff," Portella said.Shawnee Mission Medical Center employees believed only the two patients were alleged victims, but anyone who believed they were a victim as urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
