Kansas City, Kan., police were looking for a teenage girl who they said they believed shot and killed a teenage boy late Wednesday afternoon in their city.

Shortly after 4 p.m., officers were called to the area of North 10th Street and Laurel Avenue about a wreck.

When they arrived, they determined that Scott Sappington Jr. had been killed.

A vehicle had jumped a curve and was stopped across a sidewalk.

Witnesses said Sappington had just dropped off some family members at his grandma's house and started to drive away when shots were fired.

Sappington, 16, was going to be a senior this fall at Sumner Academy, where he played football, wrestled and ran track.

"It's hard. It's really hard, and when you have a good kid, it's hard for you to understand how this happened," said Felicia Johnson, the victim's mother.

Police said they believe a teenage girl shot Sappington. His family said they believed it may have been a carjacking attempt.

The shooter left behind clothing, images of which police made public, in hopes that someone will recognize it and call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS.

Sappington's father, Scott Sappington Sr., said, "Anyone who knows something, speak up. Give our heart a rest and bring this person to justice."

Sappington's friends and family members have planned a prayer vigil on Friday night.
