SHAWNEE, Kan. -- A boy in Johnson County captured the scene on his cell phone as flames shot from a Shawnee farmhouse.Firefighters were called to a fire at the vacant house along Kansas Highway 7 near 47th Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday. They put out the fire and left the scene around 9:20 p.m.Austin Brownwell, 12, said that he and a friend were at his house nearby when they saw smoke coming from the farmhouse. He grabbed his cell phone as they headed to the fire scene.Brownwell told KCTV5's Craig Nigrelli he shot the fire on his phone, "I just thought it would be pretty cool to show all my friends at school."
Firefighters had to climb a hill near K-7 to get to the burning building. Shawnee Fire Marshal John Mattox said they had to truck in water from a mile away to fight the fire.The fire rekindled by 10 p.m. Firefighters returned to the scene to put out the last of the flames.Police said they have received complaints about kids playing in and around the abandoned house in the past.Fire investigators said the utilities had been turned off at the vacant house long ago. The owner does not live on the property.The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials said it is believed to be suspicious.
