OLATHE, Kan. -- The 16-year-old charged with aggravated battery in connection with the death of his classmate will not serve any jail time.He appeared in a Johnson County Court for his sentencing Thursday.Dakota DeRemus, 16, died in February after a fight that the two of them planned. The accused teenager's punishment was agreed upon by prosecutors and the teen's defense attorney, and the judge granted their request Thursday afternoon. The teenager, who pleaded no contest to the charge, will serve 18 months probation with the possibility of early release after 12 months of good behavior.DeRemus' family had mixed views about the plea and the sentencing."He has a chance to make his life better. That's what he has to do," said Angela Meiries, DeRemus' mother. "It's not a matter of me." DeRemus' biological father, Frank DeRemus, was not in court Thursday. His representative said he was in custody in Johnson County for allegedly making threats but would not comment about the nature of those threats.
