Teen Makes Plea In Beating Trial

OLATHE, Kan. -- An area teenager accused of killing a classmate in an after-school fight pleaded no contest to a lesser charge as his trial was set to begin.The fight, which was captured on cell phone video, lasted no more than 30 seconds.Dakota Deremus, 16, and another Gardner boy agreed to fight after school one day in February, witnesses said.After the fight, Deremus died. An autopsy revealed that he had a heart condition.The Gardner teen, seen on the cell phone video beating Deremus and smiling at the camera, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but pleaded no contest Monday morning to aggravated battery.The judge can accept or reject the plea agreement when he is sentenced Thursday.Under the plea agreement, he won't do any jail time. Instead he will serve 18 months of supervised probation.
