MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Tornadoes tore through Kansas overnight, leaving two people dead in Chapman and Soldier. At Kansas State University in Manhattan, storm damage was estimated to exceed $20 million, according to Tom Rawson, the university's vice president for administration and finance. Thursday's classes were canceled."The damage on campus is extensive," Rawson said. "Roofs have been damaged or torn off, windows have been blown out in many buildings."Off of campus, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house was heavily damaged, but all residents were safe and no injuries were reported."All of the sudden, our ears starting popping from the pressure deferential, and the windows shook a little bit, but in all honesty, we didn't think we got hit. We thought it was just the wind shaking the windows, and when we knew it was past, we came up, looked outside, and I really was shocked by all the debris in our front yard," said Marshall Vantuyl, a fraternity member.About 30 summer school classes will be taught at temporary locations Friday. Some classrooms in damaged buildings could be functional by Monday, said M. Duane Nellis, provost and senior vice president.About 15 homes in Manhattan were "leveled" and more than 30 others, as well as some businesses, were seriously damaged, according to a news release from the Riley County Police Department.
