An 11-year-old boy who was shot in his home Friday near Lawson, Mo., remained hospitalized Tuesday, but his condition was improving, according to a news release from the Ray County Sheriff's Department.

Cameron Lewis and his 15-year-old brother Landon Lewis were shooting from a porch at the back of the house, according to the news release.

As the 15-year-old was swinging the shotgun toward a target, the 11-year-old entered his line of fire, the news release stated.

The 11-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his chest area from the .20-gauge shotgun.

The 15-year-old called 911.

Cameron Lewis was in critical condition at Children's Mercy Hospital for the first 48 hours after he was shot, but he was recently upgraded to fair condition.

Most of the weapons in the house were locked in a gun cabinet and the boys found the key, according to the news release.

"There was no indication of neglect or endangerment," the news release stated.
