Copper Thieves Target KC Company

Copper thieves hit a Kansas City construction company and walked away with more than just wiring.

Thieves broke into McKinzie's Construction on East 135th Street during the holiday weekend, the owner Doug McKinzie said.

McKinzie found his back fence cut and several pieces of equipment stolen, including two heavy-duty air conditioning units that McKinzie said contained at least 500 pounds of copper.

The thieves took a flatbed trailer, likely to haul away the air conditioners, McKinzie said, and they broke lights and damaged locks.

Police took a report, and the owner said he hoped officers caught the thieves quickly.

McKinzie said, "Well if the scrap metal companies would quit taking it without knowing who they are, it would sure help a lot."
