KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A woman found a grenade in a closet, leading police to send a bomb squad to the area of South 54th Street and Osage Avenue.Annette Torres said she found the rusted out grenade in her sister's basement closet Sunday night. The pin was still in the grenade, and she and her sister thought nothing of it, Torres said. They told their father, who had served in the military, and he told them to get it out of the house. Since then, the grenade had been sitting here under a tree, bagged up and wrapped in a towel."I just brought it upstairs, and I was like, 'Hey, how long has this grenade been in the basement? I was just kind of playing with it, and the kids are like, 'Hey Mom, what's that,'" Torres said. When Torres asked her sister about the grenade, Tammy Scherer, said, "I don't have a grenade in the basement. She was like, 'Yes you do,' and I looked at it and said, 'Oh my Gosh. That's a grenade.' We just kind of set it on the table and really didn't think too much of it."Their father told them to wrap the grenade in a towel and try not to bump it against anything until authorities could arrive to dispose of it.Scherer said her ex-husband may have brought the grenade into the house years ago and not told her about it.It was not her father's, she said.Police were keeping the women at a safe distance while they prepared to remove the grenade. They weren't sure if it would explode or not, but they said they were not taking any changes.
