UPDATED: 1:04 pm CDT May 22, 2008

Police ran after a driver who crashed a car and ran away.

Officers took the driver of a car into custody near East Truman Road and Troost Avenue after a foot chase, they said.

At about 11 a.m., police were checking an area near East 30th Street and Wabash Avenue where they suspected some drug activity was taking place.

They saw a car circling the area, so an officer tried to stop the car, but it took off.

Police didn't pursue the car.

Then, a few minutes later, the car pulled in behind another officer pulling into the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department parking lot at East 24th Street and Troost Avenue and again sped away.

Finally, that car ran a red light and hit a sport utility vehicle with a woman and child inside and then smashed into a building.

The driver then got out of the car and ran away.

Police ran after him and took him into custody near East 17th Street and Troost Avenue.

The woman and child in the SUV were not injured.

Police didn't know why the driver tried to get away from them, they said. The car was not stolen, and police said they didn't find any drugs or weapons in the vehicle.
