KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When a jury found a man guilty of killing another man Friday, chaos erupted in the Jackson County courtroom, and extra security rushed in to protect everyone during the sentencing. The jury found Elijah L. Jones, 27, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Carl A. Randolph, 23, and he was sentenced to life in prison.During the proceedings, tension mounted between the defendant's and victim's family members as they waited for the verdict. Bailiffs removed people from the courtroom after the verdict was read and separated the families once they were outside the courthouse.Because of threats made to the families and Jackson County workers, extra police stood guard as a precaution and escorted jurors to their cars.
Randolph was shot and beaten with the barrel of a gun in his home near East 33rd Street and Mersington Avenue nearly two years ago.The only witnesses were four children, including Randolph's. A 6-year-old relative testified.Defense attorneys said Jones was not the killer and that two men broke into Randolph's home.Prosecutors had charged Jones with first-degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. The jury also found Jones guilty of armed criminal action, and he was sentenced to 55 years for that crime.
