Jackson County prosecutors Friday charged Curtis W. Mertensmeyer, 20, in connection with a fatal hit-and-run on Ward Parkway on Mother's Day.

Mertensmeyer faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated in the crash that killed 25-year-old Daniel L. Riemann near West 56th Street and Ward Parkway.

According to court documents, broken vehicle parts were found at the scene and later matched to a vehicle that had been left at Loose Park.

Police said two witnesses who had been passengers in the vehicle came forward to report that Mertensmeyer was driving the vehicle when it struck Riemann.

Mertensmeyer's attorney, Thomas M. Bradshaw, released a statement Friday saying they had informed police Monday that Mertensmeyer was the driver of the car involved in the fatal accident and that his client was "deeply sorry that this tragedy occurred and extends his heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Riemann family."

Prosecutors have requested a $150,000 cash bond.
