OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Scam artists cheated an elderly woman out of hundreds of dollars in a roofing scheme, police said.

A group of men approached the 88-year-old Overland Park woman, offering to check her roof for storm damage.

The woman wrote them a $400 check that the men cashed within 15 minutes without having done any work.

"They're very smooth talkers," she said. "I would suggest anyone in contact to err on the side of caution, because they are so smooth talking."

Overland Park police said "fix-it" scams are common, but this was the first they had seen this year.
