Sitter Accused Of Dropping 7-Month-Old

Johnson County prosecutors charged a baby sitter with child abuse after she allegedly dropped a 7-month-old baby in her care.

Courtney Lightner, the boy's mother, said Jaxson Troxel suffered a skull fracture on his left side and subdural hematoma, bleeding under the skull.

Last Tuesday, police and paramedics responded to a call at a house on Oscar Street in Olathe.

Initially police said it appeared that Troxel's baby sitter had accidentally dropped the infant. But officials at Children's Mercy Hospital told police and the parents that they suspected something criminal had happened to the boy.

Lightner said the baby sitter is a former high school classmate of hers who had watched the boy for five months.

Although the first 48 hours at the hospital were "touch-and-go" for Troxel, nurses told the parents their son has made an amazingly quick recovery.

Jason Troxel, Jaxson's father, said they feel fortunate that there appears to be no permanent brain damage.

Prosecutors charged Suzanne Simpson, 24, with child abuse.
