UPDATED: 2:09 pm CDT May 12, 2008

A mother was shot and killed in her home on Christmas Day, with her two children nearby.

Police are asking for the public's help to solve the killing of 33-year-old Edith Janet Hernandez.

After a Christmas Eve gathering with family and friends, Hernandez was alone in her apartment with her two children.

Around 1:10 a.m., Hernandez called 911 from inside her apartment near Woodland and Missouri avenues, but police said she died before she was able to give them enough information to help track down the killer.

Police don't know of any reason why anyone would kill Hernandez. They said they found nothing to indicate that she brought this upon herself.

Anyone with information that could help police solve this crime should call the homicide department at 816-234-5043. If you wish to remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
