KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- High winds knocked downed trees and cut power early Sunday morning.A tree fell on a man's carport near on Bellefontaine Avenue with his car inside, damaging the car's windshield. At Missouri Highway 40 and Van Brunt Boulevard, a tree fell on a trailer home. No one was inside, and no one was injured.A tree fell in Patricia Amerine's backyard at East 50th and Walnut streets, and her basement flooded.
"I was baby-sitting with my grandchildren, and I came home to this mess," Amerine said. The wind triggered a tornado siren at 80th and Overland Park Drive. It sounded repeatedly and kept people in the area awake for hours before crews were able to deactivate it. It will have to be repaired. At the height of the high winds, more than 3,500 Kansas City Power & Light customers were without power, but crews worked through the night and all but a few hundred customers had had their service restored by 6 a.m.
