BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. -- A 4-year-old boy died Thursday when a delivery truck hit him.

The 21-year-old driver of the Rent-A-Center truck didn't see Mason P. McBride riding his bicycle.

It happened at about 5:30 p.m. at Southwest Ninth Street and Southwest Robin Circle. Other children were outside playing at the time, and some of them saw the incident.

Police didn't believe the truck driver did anything criminal and called the incident a "tragic accident." He remained at the scene and spoke to police after the incident. He was shaken up, and police said they believed he was driving slowly.

"When I heard about the child, it just broke my heart," said neighbor Shannon Links. "It was really upset, upsetting."

Neighbor LB Ashlock said people in the apartment complex stuck together and were there for each other.

"My best wishes go out to the family," Ashlock said.

The boy's family planned a vigil for Mason at their apartment complex Friday night.
