Kansas City Police Officer Shoots, Kills Man

A Kansas City police officer shot and killed a man Thursday afternoon near East 26th Street and Jackson Avenue.

When police tried to pull over a stolen car at about 3:30 p.m., a passenger jumped out of the vehicle and ran, police said.

"(The passenger) came out from behind some houses into a vacant lot into the 2600 block of Jackson, where an officer encountered him there," said Capt. Rich Lockhart, of the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department. "The individual pointed a gun at the officer. The officer shot the man and killed him after he pointed the gun at him. As the man fell, he threw the gun over a fence nearby. We have since located that gun, and it is in our custody."

Police were interviewing officers and witnesses at the scene. Detectives were questioning the officer involved in the shooting.

Officers took the driver of the stolen car into custody near East 19th Street and Jackson Avenue, police said.
