Prosecutors charged a 13-year-old boy with first-degree murder in juvenile court in connection with the April 19 shooting death of a Kansas City, Kan., man.

They also charged the teenager, Antwuan D. Taylor, with criminal possession of a firearm.

Charles McElroy, 47, was shot and killed near North 32nd Street and Brown Avenue.

"We believe him to be the shooter," said Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman. "It was an unprovoked attack, and the victim was shot multiple times."

Friday, the 13-year-old was in the custody of authorities at the Wyandotte County Juvenile Detention Center, and a judge decided in a court appearance that he would remain there for the time being.

During the court appearance, the victim's family members were in tears.

Taylor's mother hugged and apologized to McElroy's mother.

"She said she was sorry. She's all right. I don't have anything against her. I'm praying for her. I don't have anything against her," McElroy's mother said.

Prosecutors filed a motion seeking to have him tried as an adult. The suspect is one of the youngest in the county's history to be charged with first-degree murder, Gorman said.

"We can't rehabilitate him," Gorman said. "I think the best place for him is to be able to spend the rest of his life in prison."
