KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police called military explosives experts to a Kansas City scrap metal company after an 8-inch mortar round was found.Someone discovered the mortar round at about 6 p.m. at Galamet at 3005 Manchester Trafficway.Officers set up flares and kept people out as members of the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department bomb and arson squad were brought to the scrap yard.Police then called in the Fort Riley bomb ordinance unit, who helped them remove it.It wasn’t clear how mortar round ended up in the scrap yard, and police were investigating.Authorities believed it to be a training round.
