Shot Girl Improving, Family Says

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 5-year-old Linwood, Kan., area girl hit in the head by a stray bullet while playing in her yard last month is improving, according to a hot line recording set up to update the public about her condition.Katherine Cook has been removed from a ventilator and is expected to be moved from the intensive care unit to a physical therapy unit on Monday.She underwent surgery to have a gastric feeding tube put into place, and her parents were both able to hold her during the weekend. She's moving her mouth when they speak to her, and she's opening her eyes, but not wide enough to see her pupils.Cook was shot on Feb. 23. Investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shot.
