KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Doctors are trying to remove a 5-year-old girl who was shot in the head by a stray bullet from life support and start feeding her through a tube, her family said on Tuesday.Katherine Cook was playing in the yard of her rural Leavenworth County, Kan., home during the weekend with her brothers when the bullet hit her about an inch above her left eye.She was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital, where she's been on life support since.Investigators are trying to determine who fired the shot that hit her.On Monday, her grandfather, Curtis Cook, said he couldn't understand how someone could be so reckless with a firearm."It's very difficult for me to understand how a little girl like that could get shot where she was," he said.Investigators were trying to determine the source of the stray shot.Shortly after the incident, Leavenworth County Sheriff David Zoellner said investigators did not believe the injury was the result of a crime. The area is home to many hunters, the girl's family said.A trust fund has been established in Katherine Cook's name at Labette Bank and Commercial Bank.
