KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two young boys watched in disbelief as their sister was shot in the head during the weekend near their Linwood, Kan., home.A stray bullet hit Katherine Cook about an inch above her left eye.The 5-year-old was on life support at Children's Mercy Hospital on Monday. From the hospital on Monday, her family allowed her brother, Garrett Cook, to talk about what he saw and heard."She screamed when she fell down, and she was bleeding and I ran past her," Garrett Cook said.He ran inside to get his father."It sounded like a gunshot, and that's why I ran into the house yelling that Katherine had been shot," her brother said. The 5-year-old was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital. There were signs of hope on Monday, her grandmother said."There's no more bleeding in the head, which is really good," Pat Cook said. Her grandfather couldn't understand how someone could be so restless with a firearm, he said."It's very difficult for me to understand how a little girl like that could get shot where she was," said Curtis Cook, her grandfather.Investigators were trying to determine the source of the stray shot. They planned to set up a checkpoint on Monday to stop motorists to question them."It's a good idea, because a lot of people drive by here all the time," said Erin Steigleder, a motorist. "I think they'll find something."Authorities also planned to widen their perimeter in their search for evidence in the area.Leavenworth County Sheriff David Zoellner said investigators did not believe the injury was the result of a crime. The area is home to many hunters, according to the girl's family.
