Investigators Seek Source Of Shot That Wounded Girl

Authorities Plan To Stop, Question Motorists

A 5-year-old girl was on life support Monday after being shot in her back yard during the weekend, and investigators were trying to determine who fired the shot that hit her in the head.

Katherine Cook was playing with her two brothers outside her rural Leavenworth County home near Linwood, Kan., on Saturday when the boys heard a noise they said sounded like a clap.

The girl fell to the ground, and the boys called their father, who found the girl bleeding from the head. The child was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Leavenworth County Sheriff David Zoellner said investigators do not believe the injury was the result of a crime, but investigators were still trying to determine who fired the shot.

The area is home to many hunters, according to the girl's family.

Investigators planned to set up a checkpoint just south of their home and stop motorists there to ask them if they had any information about the shooting.

"It's a good idea, because a lot of people drive by here all the time," said Erin Steigleder, a motorist. "I think they'll find something."

Authorities also planned to extend their perimeter in their search for evidence.
