5-Year-Old Shot In Head

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. -- A 5-year-old girl is on life support after being shot in her own back yard over the weekend, police said.Katherine Cook was playing with her two brothers outside her rural Leavenworth County home near Linwood on Saturday when the boys heard a noise they said sounded like a clap.The girl fell to the ground, and the boys called their father, who found the girl bleeding from the head. The child was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.Leavenworth County Sheriff David Zoellner said investigators do not believe the injury was the result of a crime. He said no arrests have been made.Pat Cook, Katherine's grandmother, said people in the area often fire guns for hunting or target practice.
